How long have you lived in Crested Butte?
Since December 2010, with the exception of an incredibly too long hiatus from Aug ’11 to Nov ’12. No plans to do that again anytime soon.
Why did you choose to work with people with disabilities?
I fell into the world of adaptive sports and working with people with disabilities while searching for an internship in college. A friend’s family member was recovering from an accident that cause paralysis and I began to hear about all of the recreational possibilities out there for someone with a disability. Our work is related to what I studied in college (Kinesiology) and I enjoy applying what I know toward teaching our participants how they can use their bodies and abilities to participate in activities alongside their friends and family. Every day and every person is different and interesting, which makes going to work every day easy and exciting.
How did you come to work with the ASC? How long have you been here?
I started at the ASC as a winter intern in Dec 2010 and followed that with a summer internship in 2011. After leaving for ’11-’12 winter, I volunteered for the ’12-’13 winter and began working as a summer instructor in 2013. This is my first winter as an ASC instructor.
How long have you been skiing/snowboarding?
After a failed attempt at skiing (first – but not last – ski patrol toboggan ride) in 2005, I strapped on a board full-time in 2006. Another short-lived semi-successful attempt at skiing in January 2011, and finally had the ‘aha’ moment and became a full-time skier on the 3rd and final try in November 2012.
