“Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.” -- John Wayne
Brian's career in marketing and communications led him from an Air Force pararescue unit, to the war torn Balkans, to the flooded streets of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, to a job at a fire district and a university. A former Captain in the Air Force Reserve and television news reporter for eleven years, Brian worked in Denver, Yakima, Washington, Colorado Springs, Albuquerque and Portland, Oregon before landing in the Gunnison Valley. Brian worked weekends for nine years as a ski patroller on Mount Hood and saw firsthand how traumatic injuries can change lives. He eventually left his day job in television news to become the spokesperson for Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue in Portland. He then moved to Gunnison to be the Director of Marketing Communications at Western State Colorado University for nearly four years before transitioning to his role at the Adaptive Sports Center. Brian lives in Crested Butte with his two kids.
How long have you lived in Crested Butte?
One year in Crested Butte, four years in the Gunnison Valley.
Why did you choose to work with people with disabilities?
As an Air Force veteran, former ski patroller and firefighter, I've seen many lives altered by traumatic injuries. I've also witnessed former colleagues and patients adapt to their new lives with disabilities. Because of these personal connections, I'm passionate about helping the Adaptive Sports Center grow and change more lives.
How did you come to work with the ASC? How long have you been here?
After nearly four years helping Western State Colorado University grow its enrollment, I was looking for a new challenge. The Adaptive Sports Center's mission inspired me to make the change because the marketing role pairs my strategic communications skills with my passions for marketing, the outdoors and improving lives.
How long have you been skiing/snowboarding?
Some of my earliest childhood memories involve skiing in Colorado. I grew up skiing at Hidden Valley in Rocky Mountain National Park and Eldora in Nederland and raced for the University of Colorado at Boulder downhill ski team.
